Like Velvet Underground, The, their most obvious influence, the chart success of the Jesus and Mary Chain was virtually non-existent, but their artistic impact was incalculable; quite simply, the British group made the world safe for white noise, orchestrating a sound dense in squalling feedback which served as an inspiration to everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Dinosaur Jr.. THE SAMPLE WAS AN OLD SCHOOL RECORDING OF A GUY SINGING "THE FAMOUS MR ED..." SO I FINALLY WENT TO SEARCH FOR IT AND THIS IS WHAT I FIND. AND IT KIND OF MAKES SENSE...

Mister Ed was an American television situation comedy that first aired as a syndicated program on January 5, 1961 to July 2, 1961 and then on CBS from October 1, 1961 to February 6, 1966. Mister Ed was the first series ever to debut as a midseason replacement, occurring before the premiere of Batman, five years later.

The stars of the show are Mister Ed, an intelligent talking palomino American Saddlebred gelding Bamboo Harvester and voiced by Allan Lane), and his owner, architect Wilbur Post (portrayed by Alan Young). Much of the program's humor stemmed from the fact Mister Ed would speak only to Wilbur. According to the show's producer, Arthur Lubin, Young was chosen because "he seemed like a guy a horse would talk to." Lubin, a friend of Mae West, scored a coup by persuading the screen icon to guest star in one episode.

THEME SONG AND URBAN LEGEND

The theme song was written by the songwriting team of Jay Livingston and Ray Evans and sung, for the show, by Livingston. According to an urban legend when the theme song for Mister Ed was played backwards the words "SOMEONE SUNG THE SONG FOR SATAN" and THE SOURCE IS THE DEVIL" are clearly heard. These phrases are heard by some listeners due to the phenomenon called phonetic reversal.^[1]

DEATH

By the time Mister Ed reached the age of 19 he was suffering from a broken leg and A VARIETY OF HEALTH PROBLEMS, and in 1970 he was quietly put to death with no publicity. However, in an interview on Los Angeles station KECT's program "Life and Times", Alan Young stated that Mr. Ed died from an inadvertent tranquilizer administered while he was "in retirement" in a stable in Burbank, California.

A horse that died in Oklahoma in 1979 (widely reported to have been Mister Ed, including sardonic comments on Saturday Night Live's faux news segment) was in fact an animal that once posed as Ed for publicity photos used by the production company.

The first words Mr. Ed spoke were: "IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I WAS A PONY"

I was supposed to have a exhibition called "Low cost housing" at Canned Applause record shop in Melville on the 31st of this month where i was going to give away 60 A3 pen and ink drawings on a first come first serve basis along with a 100 beers and three bottles of vodka... But due to illness I'm stuck in a hospital bed in Cape Town right now, so hopefully next month. I'm not one to give advice but one thing i can advise is - get medical aid...

These are all ideas im sending out for approval. Its for the up and coming gig at the Bohemian with Battery 9 and Null. i sent some additional A3 black and white posters with that i made with stolen images from Jasons blog. Yes and i will ask Jasons permission before they get printed... but he is just a big girl anyway.

And here are the poster ideas, just print them out on A4 or A3 d then enlarge them on a photo copy machine to a bigger size. But we will see... hopefully all the party's agree on them.

I made this one this morning, Nul is by far one of Loyd and mines favorites at the Bohemian. When i forwarded the mailer to them the lead guy had no clue what it was about and thought i had sent him an invoice of some kind before looking at it... but he was pleased at the end. The coil in the middle is a Tesla Coil and i was gonna use X ray machines as the main graphic but then i found these old X Ray specs that used to be in the back of comics and probably still is... oh and thanks to Mr Neon for pointing out the spelling mistake.

Seeing that I hang out at the Bohemian almost every day i decided to make mailers for all the bands i like that's playing there this month regardless whether the band likes them or not I'm gonna mail them out. Jaxon once pointed out in an earlier post (A few outstanding individuals) that the priests of the Satanic church looked similar to Catholic priests. I found these two nuns and they looked heavy, solid and really on edge. I would not be surprised if nuns can rally shoot Lazar beams from their eyes to kill stray poodles...

So decided to commit Facebook suicide, the following article made it to page three in the pages of SONDAG the Sunday Afrikaans gossip tabloid, i documented the steps on another blog called my facebook suicide The original idea was to resurrect myself as a online Jesus after three days... but we all know what happened last time all the human Apes had a Jesus.

Its Jonni Fuckin Neons birthday today, so i drew him a little something to say happy birthday. Johannesburg has done him well and made him a lot more street savvy than living in that fancy pants hippie town where his from. Despite how his friends see him, he is the kind of guy that can walk around the streets easely with a pair of tracksuit pants, leather jacket , slippers and a short of wiskey with no ice. I respect that. He has definately added a bit of flair to JHB and his art is probably better than yours...He also understands the real meaning of DEVO which will always leave him a special place in my heart.Three cheers mate!

Warren took these pictures at fashion week a few weeks ago, they reminded of some of the girls on the Smiths albums so i thought i would make some of my own and pass it on to john from the Black Hotels. I must ad that i do enjoy having my own personal little image bank that i can loot, from time to time. This was the highlight of my day today, a friend of mine gave me this magazine a couple of weeks ago called Meatmagazine. Its a publication from the UK dedicated to showcase new artistic talent from across the UK. He was not aware that my blog was called meatmania so i immediately related to the magazine. My blog was meant to be called steak but some other tosser already scooped up that name so i went for the one I'm with now. I spent my lunch or rather liquid lunch reading an interview with Rick Poynor who was involved in the "FIRST THINGS FIRST 2000" manifesto, a 400 word statement about designers priorities and responsibilities intended to prick conscience and provoke discussion. This is me stabbing fish, its a hobby of mine that i treasure and hold close to my heart. I don't think people realise the joy i get out of clip art, its save so much time for a lazy designer as myself. The body's are of me doing the skank in my bedroom and taken by Neil while we were blazed for another project i was busy with that never materialised. Its in my portfolio under random and was meant to be for a flyer for a JHB Live dub party. I used to stab rock pool fish with a homemade harpoon when i was a kid at the beach, luckily I'm not that violent anymore...

So Loyd lets me know this morning that the BLK JKS are playing at the Bohemian tonight, to which i immediately replied because this Thursday deal at the Bo seems to be happening every week now, random shit talking and finger pointing are usually in order with a bit of a tweak on the side plus Loyd is a trained professional in these areas of socialising. I thought i would make a flyer seeing that i have some time and send it out with the mailing list and see who turns up. When i called up the Bo they told me that the bands have cancelled... and are only playing on the 28Th. So here is the flyer but i still did not get the cover.

So then a couple of weeks later i eventaully made the final and moved a couple of elements around, the band "Us kids know" failed to show up including myself... and the BLK JKS opened up for the Bang. I missed out on Loyds little party though, pity.

Then i also found this little number i did for an article for Isolation on the Afrikaans death metal group called INSEK. I don't really use my illustration work that much in my layouts but in both these cases they seem to work nicely.

ON A DEAD MANS DOOR STEP

As usual my attempts to do graphics for my favourite local bands go without success , these are some ideas i sent to the Black Hotels a while back that i dug up out of my archive of unused graphics on my machine.

These ones were done with Jason's drawings (The one eyed man is king). My original thought was to do a whole series that fit into each other length wise to paste over all those other poster under bridges and stuff, the white posters with the black lines and red would stand out by a mile. i tried to persuade the Black Jacks with the same concept. It would have been cheap and you could smoke one up before you go and paste it up along the road side.

DARWIN'S LIVING NIGHTMARE

I'm am very good at starting something up until it is 90% done and then suddenly losing interest... I have been going through my projects on my hard drive and finding some bizarre unfinished ideas and concepts. This was a cover i was working on for the one eyed man Jason's zine called Back Issue. You can go check them out through his link on this page. Even though they were done i never sent it to him because of some unknown internal crisis at the time... NO DOGS BODY was a comic i used to do for Session magazine when it first started, none of the kids liked my cynical outlook on skateboarding and life and complained about it till we left it out of the mag. I was planning the elusive return of NO DOGS through Back issue but allas. Look out for a another Blog feuturing only the man himself and and vintage versions from his printed days to follow soon on this page. Some of the drawings on the cover are from Jason that i mixed into my layout.

The following was one of the comics i was busy with for inside but just like the comic of Satan attacking the earth earlier on this page (A FEW OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS), i never finished it. I have always been into the evolution of the species and this is basically my simple explanation of where we come from and my outlook on religion in general. A real modern day Darwin, fancy that...

WITBOY IN AFRIKA

These are two book cover ideas i sent to Deon Maas for his new book called WITBOY IN AFRIKA. So far he seems to like the second one more with the yellow. For some reason i will be so convinced that a certain person would like a certain layout with an opposite result. The pieces i read from the book were hilarious and i really enjoyed working on these covers.

And then he settled for a bit of a mix between the two, we replaced the legs with his own legs and added a new font. The book will be on shelf in Dec. for the Christmas lists.

Mpumi sent me brief a while ago... it was epic and i will publish it on here shortly so you lot can have a look. I had many sleepless nights about it becuase i am a white boy trying to think black. Anyway here is yet another humble attempt at an album cover that will probably never be used. I did follow the brief though for the first time in my life, well i hope.

I found all these items and the wooden box at Verkykerskop near Harrysmith in the Freestate, if you read the brief you would understand it more but it's meant to be some sort of a survival kit... I thought it would maybe be better if all of them go out and pick their own products and we re pack it maybe so that they are all part of the process. Anyway we will see how it goes.

What is the effect of modern life on living organisms such as man & the enviroment, is this kind of 'progress' in keeping with the natural way of the cosmos, is there such a thing as the right direction in terms of progress universally speaking?

A good friend of mine, Martin sent me these Clout 7"'s from Switserland or something. They came from a car boot sale and i got them in this nice red British mail envelope. Its like they are worth anything but i suppose its a bit of SA pride. These ladies were massive.

This has embossed letters - very fancy.

And then obviously i was left with a nasty little reminder on the back stating this...
Anyway, atleast nothing inside was taken.

I have a very cool neighbour, he is Dutch and we drink a lot of wiskey together when we have the chance. I Have always imagined that if Kurt Cobain was still alive he would have looked very similar to him cause they are about the same age. Anyway he owns this Talking Heads record called "Speaking in tongues (Robert Rauschenberg)" which he also bought in Europe as it came out. Its a printed vinyl and very rare and we also realised that it is worth a lot of money, a lot more that you think. Rauschenberg id one of my favourite artist and im definately wearing the green jacket when i hold this little number in my sweaty palms...

This is what i have... a broken Talking Heads live 1979 copied CD that Loyd gave me one drunken night at the Bohemian. I was very excited and stuck it into my back pocket. I sat down at the bar and had another drink. The disapointment was clear enough when i got home to find two pieces in my back pocket.

SOME OLD BULLSHIT

I found some of my old work on a disc, none of the these graphics exept for the top one was printed. Its a picture of Gavin Morgan and i think it was taken by Gavin Scott. Gavin really chucked his board in the air even though i remembered a lot of people thought i put it in afterwards. It was for a KFD tour ad or something in Session magazine but i dont have the ad anymore. I did some t shirts for KFD Modern living tour, but i dont know where it is now. I always tried to get some graphics on a board, i have done heaps for different companies and none of them ever got printed... Apparently the didn't fit the image of the company or something.

KIND OF LIKE ITS LOSING ITS LUCK

I have been doing a lot of stuff with the BLK JKS lately, the piece underneath the clover was a sort of collage that i made out of old Letraset pages i found about ten years ago. I like the fact that other people scratched off the letters and not me. So i thought it would be cool for the cover of the EP that's supposed to be released soon but we will soon see if that is going to happen... I was originally using it for the promo disc that i have been sending out to people. I'm making them by hand so i I'm only making twenty of them and numbering them. It was nice to make things with my hands again after sitting in front of a machine for so long. Maybe i will even start painting again.

The logo at the top was drawn by my lady on a loose piece of paper for some project she was busy with, i scanned it in and copied one of the leaves and made it black and moved it to the bottom so it looks like a four leaved clover that lost its fourth leaf. Kind of like its losing its luck. Mpumi said to me that if anybody had to ask him what a Black Jack looked like that logo says it perfectly. It goes without text, just plain by itself.

This was part of the booklet that goes with the promo disc, Warren took them at the Lark launch at Carfax or something. These are some flyer's was messing around with, the invisible man one went out a while ago, the animal cacharacter's with the shades on was originally made for a BOO! cover but they were not really into it so i always hanged on to them cause i just liked the look of them. The one with the Tolouse Lautrec painting of a dancing lady that says "I heard thye were SHIT" was cause somebody said to me that he heard they were shit. I spelled it wrong on purpose just cause i can, anyway the radio that she is dancing with has been used in layouts for Session, Hype, and Stage magazine. I get lazy like that sometimes.

A FEW OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS

Hell o friends... what follows next is my version of the Dark Lord swiping away on the day of reckoning. The style was based on a previous comic i used to do for SESSION skateboarding magazine a couple of years ago called "No dogs body". This one is not finished yet but is being pitched for a new comic book brought out by Mark Kannemyer (Lorcan White" early next year. He might not go for it because its more of a cut and paste than it is drawn but the sense of humour is still there so i hope he goes for it. It was the first time i ever did something in Afrikaans and it felt a bit weird making something out of childhood fairy tales that used to keep me awake at night... If old Nick pulls in here one day i hope it would be like this or rather this is how i envisioned it... with all those penis balloons firing randomly at all the humans running like sheep all along the beach. I should probably ad some trumpets too. I got the devil from the first Slayer album called "Show no mercy" but i will talk more about that when the blasted thing is finished ! So here is a sneak peek of the tale simply called BOK NAAI.

And then just to top it all off i thought i would add this pic as a bonus. This our man Magus Anton Szandor LaVey (1930-1997), Founder of the Satanic church and one of his rocking cocktail parties at his house in S.F.By the looks of it he certainly seems to know how to entertain. How can any person actually take religion seriously with costumes like this ! Jaxon pointed out that they look quite similar to priests in the Catholic church...I agree, if the nuns walked around in the nude with black rubber animal heads they could completely relate.

And then there is the quote of the month "We are looking for a few outstanding individuals..." on the opening page of the Church of satan website and i thought to myself. "I could be that individual..."

COWBOYS FROM HELL

About a week ago Warren and myself left the Jim Neversink show at the Bohemian very emotional. It was one of the best live gigs i had ever seen. They are apparently busy recording at the moment right now or they have finished but i found out that they did not have a album cover yet so i started working on one earlier this week to pitch to them. The idea was based on these old pinball machine parts i had and some of the tables plans that i found on the internet. The cover parts were scanned in from silkscreen prints i had from a second hand shop called STUFF i used to work in. I called up Micheal (Jim) and asked him what the album title was and he said "Shaky is good", which i thought was suprisingly very related to the pinball idea, like when your tilting the machine or something. Anyway Warren supplied the photos from a drunken fashion shoot we did one night at back to Basics, allthough the shots had been used in STAGE magazine (all but one) we are planning on doing a new shoot to suit the band if they agree on the idea...
